By: Ridwan Sa'at

What is a question rubric? If you wonder what a question rubric in IELTS writing task 1 or 2, here is the explanation:
Question rubric has topic and writing instruction. These are in the box usually. In addition to these two items, there are also instructions before the rubric and following the rubric.

Here's two examples of question rubric:

A. Writing Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The table below gives information on consumer spending on different items in five different countries in 2002.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words

B. Writing Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Write about the following topic:

It is generally believed that some people are born with certain talents, for instance for sport or music, and others are not. However, it is sometimes claimed that any child can be taught to become a good sports person or musician.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.

So the one in blue is the context or topic and following that still in the box is the instruction. Read carefully the topic and the instruction. One of the criteria of good score in IELTS writing is whether you exactly answer the question or not. Another thing is that most of the time you need to paraphrase this topic of question rubric in your introductory paragraph both in writing task 1 and writing task 2.
