ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES ESSAY

By Ridwan Sa'at

As dealing with other essays in IELTS exam, what we need to do first is to see and observe the question. Identifying what kind of essay is being asked to you to respond is key thing in the success of doing IELTS exam. Understanding the question will lead you to select what kind of response you need to give in order to really respond to the question. There are some differences in the way we respond to the essay questions. If you are dealing with agree or disagree essay, it is best to use opinion essay pattern or if you are dealing with problem-solution essay, it is appropriate to use problem-solution pattern. The patterns are not just how you structure you paragraphs but how you put the essential parts of your essay in the correct place.

For advantages and disadvantages essay, the pattern is quite unique:
The essay structure:

1. Always put your response in 4-paragraph essay: introduction, advantages paragraph, disadvantages
    paragraph and conclusion.
2. Notice where you put the following essential parts:
In introduction paragraph: write a background/paraphrase of the question topic and the thesis
statement. There is always a thesis statement in each essay. Note: Do not write  your opinion in this
    thesis statement.
3. Write your second paragraph/advantages paragraph by introducing the advantages using coherence
    words.
4. Write your opinion at the conclusion paragraph after the summary.

Now look at the following example:

"Many young people today leave their own countries to work abroad."

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of working abroad and give your own opinion.

From this question rubric it is clear that you will have to give response of a discussion essay. The discussion of advantages and disadvantages and then give your opinion.

It is very important every time you write an essay that you follow three simple steps.
Planning, writing and revising. It is key thing that you write an outline to your essay as your planning stage.

Now the outline for the above question may look like this:
Brainstorming the ideas

      Advantages
  • Secure better paid employment, help financially your family back home
  • Broaden your mind.
       Disadvantages
  • Cost of living; little money to send back home, high tax payment
  • Culture shock (strange, alien and unpleasant)
Study the following response to the above writing task 2 question on advantage and disadvantage essay.

Paragraph 1: Introduction
  • A paraphrase of the topic
  • A thesis statement
It is now fairly common for young people to leave their own country in order to find work abroad. As with most important decisions, there are both advantages and disadvantages in the choice that is made.

Paragraph 2: Details of Advantages
Pattern: write the idea + reason/causes/explanation

The financial aspect to migrating might well be the most important. A young person who lives in a still-developing country can earn more if he or she works in a country with an advanced economy. Currencies in such countries tend to be stronger than in the migrant's homeland and so money and so money can be sent back to families in the form of remittances. These will the family to have a better standard of living. A second advantage to working abroad is that one gets to meet new people and make new friends from different cultures. This can be exciting and it will broaden one's horizons and outlook.

Paragraph 3: Details of Disadvantages
Pattern: write the idea + reason/causes/explanation

However, there could be disadvantages for a young person who decides to work abroad. First of all, a young person might find that although wages are higher than in their own country, so is the cost of living. It might, therefore, be difficult to make ends meet. This might mean that no (or very little) money can be sent home, and this might lead to  feelings of regret and guilt at having left. Secondly, while it may be at first a young person might be excited about being in a foreign country, ultimately he or she might suffer from culture shock, which can be extremely unpleasant. The person might wish to return to their own country but perhaps this is financially impossible. Homesickness is a very common feeling. These negative feelings might also occur if the young person meets people, perhaps colleagues, who are racist and resent foreigners. Although people are generally tolerant, some people are not.

Paragraph 4: Conclusion
Summary + your opinion

To conclude, there are both advantages and disadvantages for young people who work abroad. However, I believe that the advantages by far outweigh the disadvantages, as the experience a young person gets from working abroad and becoming independent will be invaluable.
