LABELING QUESTION IN IELTS

By:Ridwan Sa'at

Sometimes in IELTS reading section you are asked to complete a diagram in which you are presented with a picture or a set of picture with some incomplete phrases or sentences accompanying the pictures. This type of question never appears at the beginning of the reading. So we consider skimming the text is assumed to have been done prior to the first set of question; for example true, false or not given question.

Here are the strategies in handling the labeling question:
  1. First of all look at the instruction, find out how many words you are allowed to write. If the instruction says 'write no more than two words', writing three words in your answer sheet will be fatal; no mark for your answer.
  2. Secondly, read the heading and sub-heading of the the label if they exist. Why reading the title or heading is important? Well, it can also give you the idea of what the label is all about. Knowing what the label is about can help you to refer to what paragraph to look in the text (remember you know what each paragraph is about after you do skimming the text first hand).
  3. After that, you need to read the lines or sentences in each question and try to highlight the key words in these sentences. Then you need to think of the synonyms of these key words. Why thinking of synonyms or paraphrases of these key words is essential? To tell you the secret, the key words you underlined will not be in the text. Instead, they are the synonym of the key words that are in the text. That's why it is crucial to think of the synonyms or paraphrases.
  4. Next thing to do is observing the blank in the label diagram. By looking at the key words you have underlined, you can know whether the word for the blank should be a noun, a verb or a preposition. This will save your time.
  5. Then using the key words scan the paragraph you have to refer to and find the synonyms or paraphrases of the key words. Once you find the synonyms or the paraphrases, read around and try to find the word suitable for the blank.
  6. Finally copy the word/s and put it/them in the blank. See if it makes sense. Even if you have completed all answers in this labeling questions, make sure they all make sense and have similar meanings to the paragraph.
I hope this article is useful. Until we discuss again in flowchart completion question in reading.
